Delivering Christmas Early - Giant Robot Prank

How could we build a Giant 5ft Attacknid Robot and not have some fun with it?

We wanted to create a video for Christmas featuring our giant Attacknid so in the spirit of current trends, we thought we would 'wrongly' deliver it to a few houses and see what reaction we got. I think it's safe to say they were mixed!

Strangely no one actually wanted to keep the thing...

So what would you do if we delivered it to your house at Christmas?

If you've been keeping up to date with us on Facebook you will know that, with your help, we've been building the Ultimate Combat Creature. We’ve given our fans multiple custom choices for every section of the Attacknid, getting them to vote on their favourite. We have then used each of these sections together to form the Ultimate Combat Creature, and now it is ready!

Yes it’s a bit of a mash up of ideas, but that’s exactly what we wanted. So as a thank you to everyone who got involved we are now running a competition to give this Ultimate Combat Creature away!

To enter all you have to do is head over to our Facebook page, find the last Ultimate Combat Creature post on our timeline and comment letting us know what your Ultimate Combat Creature would look like.

The Giant Attacknid

As many of you now know we have built a Giant Attacknid! Taking inspiration from Attacknid inventor, Jaimie Mantzel's, Giant Robot Project! We didn't go quite as big as Jaimie's 12 foot robot but what we did do was make our giant look and work exactly like the Attacknid toy. In the end the Giant Attacknid was 5ft high (5 x the size of the Attacknid) and 300lbs (125 x the weight of the Attacknid) and it functions in the exact same way! The Exploda-Armor explodes off the legs when hit, the dart blaster fires out supersized Combat Creatures darts and get hit on the Battle Brain 3 times, the giant will shut down!

Since building the Giant Attacknid we have taken it around the world. Visiting famous landmarks in San Francisco, taking it to the Sand Dunes in Dubai, visiting the AOL offices and even getting invited down for a party at Google's head office in California!

The Combat Creatures Attacknids can walk through lots of terrains from mud to snow however we thought we would put Doom Razor through his paces just to prove it.

We're calling this series 'Will it Walk?' The challenges will consist of Doom Razor walking through some more unique substances; so far we've done both Baked Beans and Golden Syrup! So what do you think? Will it Walk? Join in on Facebook!

Want to challenge us? Leave your challenges in the comments section of the videos.

Award, Awards and more Awards

Combat Creatures has been winning awards since the brand launched last year, well now the brand has gone worldwide the awards are piling in, with three new ones being announced this week!

So far this week we have won the Dad's Choice Award, all Dad's love Attacknids so we were pretty chuffed with that one, we also picked up the parents choice awards. These awards mean a lot to us as they come from the parents and kids, and at the end of the day they're the people we're here to please.

On another note though we have also been shortlisted for a very prestigous industry award, and not just us, Jaimie too! Attacknid inventor Jaimie Mantzel and the three Wow! Stuff founders (the company behind the Combat Creatures brand) have been shortlisted for The World Technology Network award for their work on the Attacknids! Past finalists include engineers from MIT, Google and Microsoft! So we're in some pretty big company. We're very excited about this one and we'll let you know how we get on in the finals.

Jaimie's Blog #2 - Kickstarter and GRP

I'm been busily working away in my secret mountain laboratory.  ....which isn't really that secret since its all over youtube.  2 big big projects are in the works.

1. I launched a kickstarter for robot toy kits.  Wowstuff is helping me with the logistics, but in a nutshell, they're robot kits the way I'd want them.  Going through the list of backers is like reading a who's who list of global hackers.  Its really amazing.  Still, the goal is a long way off.  I have to get it funded by August 14th!  It seems so soon!  I'm hoping to get some more publicity for it soon to give it a boost.  The kits themselves are great fun to put together.  People have been asking how the spider tanks work ever since I showed the first one.  Now anyone can find out by putting one together themselves.  :-)  Here's the link to that!

The Greatest Toy KIT in the Universe! Spider Tank Mark 6 by Jaimie Mantzel — Kickstarter

Oh, and here's a link to my kickstarter "commercial".

2.  I decided to put the rest of the world aside for a few weeks and finish my giant robot.  ....which is a 12+ foot tall spider tank.  :-)  I'm scheduling a test drive for August 6th ar a friends farm.  I'd do it here on the mountain, but there are too many trees for a real test.  Last week i finished the mechanical parts, yesterday I put most of the electronics together, and this week I'll be wrapping up the last bits, and carrying the entire thing down my mountain in pieces.  I'm not sure how that's going to go, but I've been doing lots of yoga, so I shouldn't pull any hammies.  :-)  I have to admit.... I'm a bit nervous.  It could all go up in flames!  Succeed, or fail, I hope its spectacular!

Jaimie's Blog .....ooooohhhhhhh the blooooog

I've been taking a much needed rest in the Bahamas after the marathon of inventing amazingness that resulted in the coolest toy ever.  :-)  While in the Bahamas, though, my building soul couldn't sit still.  I noticed that lots of strange, and useful things washed up on the beach, so I started collecting them. I went running on the beach every few days looking for treasure.  The hardest trip was my last one.  I had almost everything I needed to make a boat, except for a 55gallon drum, some more rope, and a long board.  I found them 5 miles away on the beach.  I tied the barrel to the board, threw everything else in the barrel, and put the board over my shoulder.  On the way back, I picked up some rare shells for the lady down the street who sells them.

I made 2 pontoons out of rectangular jugs.  Most of them had holes in them, so I stuffed them with styrofoam and bottles.  :-)  Next I made a wood frame to connect them.  I hit some good luck, and someone let me borrow a saw to make notches in the wood so it fit together well.  I tied it all together with ropes, making sure to get the ropes wet first because they stretch out longer when wet, and get nice and tight when they dry out.  Then I used big round barrels for the middle pontoon, and put up a mast made out of a small fallen tree.  The sails were old beach umbrellas, and I made paddles out of some PVC pipes, rope, and leftover pieces of barrels.

It was great fun, and some of the kids in the area had a blast hitching rides.  A neighbor and I went on several fishing trips.  It was great!  Here's a picture of me with my daughter driving around in the beautiful blue tropical water.  Letting your imagination run wild can result in some awesome experiences.  :-)

I documented the whole thing, and posted it on youtube starting here:

Attacknids win 'TNPC Seal of Approval'

It’s a happy day at Combat Creatures HQ! Our Attacknids have picked up yet another award! Already this year they’ve won the Popular Science Best at Show award at New York Toy Fair and Best Boys Toy of the Year in Australia. Now they’ve gone and been awarded the National Parenting Center seal of approval.

The National Parenting Center seal means so much to us because we believe so strongly in awards that are endorsed and tested by the most important people of all – the kids, and perhaps the second most important people, their parents! So this is a proud day for us all and we couldn’t wait to share the news with you all.

The National Parenting Center also put an awesome review on their website…

"Watching this spider-like robot come to life and start crawling around your home is quite a sight. We've seen lots of remote controlled vehicles but nothing that moves quite like this. Using the remote control takes only minutes to master and in no time you will be antagonizing the dog while firing soft foam disks.

The real fun comes when you introduce a second Attacknid and the battle ensues. The objective here is to knock off the armor of your opponent with those disks that fly a lot further than you might think. Granted at nearly $100 many parents won't be buying two, but you can bet your kids or Dad will be begging for another one or at least scouring the neighborhood for an opponent.

Testers thought the build quality was superb as it survived numerous drops onto hard floors. The instruction manual is very thorough and will get even the most novice of R/C operators maneuvering their combat creature in short order. Testers also felt good about the softness of the disks and their inability to inflict any damage, other than to other Attacknids."

About the NPC

The National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval program, created in 1990 as an adjunct to TNPC's support services, identifies the finest products and services being marketed to the parent/child audience. From educational and entertainment products and equipment to travel destinations, the consumer oriented testing process solicits evaluations from parents and their children. This award signifies to other parents that their peers have acknowledged a product's quality and desirability based on a wide variety of determining factors.

The Attacknids make their way to Asia!

Following huge success in the UK and now Australia and New Zealand, next stop for the Attacknids is Singapore. Sheng Tai toys will be distributing the Combat Creatures brand in Singapore and Malaysia and are launching the brand with a whole host of Battle Arena events in the coming months. The Battle Arena really is going worldwide!

Sheng Tai Toys have teamed with Energizer batteries in Singapore as the official battery sponsor for the Attacknids. This means that the first location for the Combat Creatures Battle Arena will be Energizer's Singapore night race 2013. This event takes place on May 11th. There will be a total of 5000 participants at this race, with the Battle Arena being placed in the carnival area for everyone to play on both before and after the race.

From here the Battle Arena will begin it's tour of the country with events taking place at three different locations with a total of 22 days of battling. The format will run the same as the UK with live scoring, certificates for all who take part and the scores going on the live leaderboard so keep your eyes peeled on the leaderboard to see who comes out as the ultimate battler!

The Attacknids have invaded Australia!

So late last year we started working with a great company in Australia called Modern Brands. They are going to be selling the Attacknids to all the big Australian and New Zealand toy stores this year. Starting with the 2012 Attacknids, which will be officially released in Australia in April with the 2013 Attacknids being released at the same time as the rest of the world.

There are Toy Fairs all over the world at this time of the year so all toy companies can show off what fantastic toys they’ve got for the upcoming year. Well this week its Melbourne’s turn at the Australian Toy, Hobby and Nursery Show. This is where the Attacknids have been unveiled for the first time in Australia to say that they’ve gone down a storm would be an understatement!

On their first day on Aus soil they were awarded the 2013 Boys Toy of the Year Award by the Australian Toy Association! And on their second day following on from massive TV appearances in the UK and US they were having their first prime time TV appearance over in Australia on the biggest morning show, Mornings on Channel 9!

With Battle Arena events set to take place throughout April watch this space for more information on how to get involved with these events.
